"We stopped by the botanic park one morning while in Steamboat. It was free to get in (they do accept donations, if you feel so inclined), and there was nobody else there at that time. There were many different gardens to explore and our kids had fun looking at the different flowers and plants. It's easy to get around and very well cared for." Website
4. Strawberry Park Hot Springs
"Loved the springs. Very hot! Take your hiking gear because the Hot Springs Trail is fantastic!
Take your own towel and drinks. Sign says no alcohol but as long as you are discreet you are fine. "
"What a wonderful experience. The pools are wonderfully relaxing, there are three categories of pools. Hottest, Hot, then Cold (mountain runoff). The pools range in temperature from 110*F to about 40*F, felt like a polar plunge. We visited the first week of June and had beautiful weather. There was also seating to lounge in the sunshine." website
5. Steamboat Springs Ski Resort - Discount Ski Tickets!
Steamboat is located near the town of Steamboat Springs. Averaging snowfall of 334 inches a year, Steamboat attracts powder hounds that flock to Steamboat for its “champagne powder” and some of the best glade skiing anywhere. The resort is served by 23 lifts and has terrain suitable for skiers and riders of all ability levels. Steamboat also has two terrain parks for the tricksters and jibbers.
"I have only taken the Gondola to ski. For skiing, it is definitely the best, and fastest way to get to other parts of the mountain. The view from the lodge at the top is beautiful. The lodge has a full service restaurant, a cafeteria, and a bar. It also has a small display of Steamboat Olympians. Be sure to stop and see it on the second floor."
Great entertainment for kids. Our 7 year old was skeptical, but when he started rolling his eyes lit up and the smile was undeniable. We had a blast bumping one another and spinning around. He's 4'1" and was just tall enough to be solo to work the levers. Skating was also fun. Staff were helpful and nice. website
The Routt National Forest is just east of Steamboat Springs and State Highway 131 and encompasses the eastern portion of Routt County. Recent Mountain Pine Beetle infestations have damaged huge areas in this forest, but it is still worth a visit. There are great day hiking and horseback trails in the summer and cross country skiing and snowmobile ones in the winter. I recommend the Rabbit Ears Pass area (US Highway 40) for both. For more extreme hikers, there is the Mount Zirkel Wilderness area and the Continental Divide Trail which can be accessed from many Routt NF points. Other places of interests in the forest region are the Fish Creek Falls area (County Road 37) near Steamboat Springs and Buffalo Pass (Country Road 38) just northwest of the town. To get to Buffalo Pass there is a nice easy road up from the eastern side (Jackson County Road 60), but a hard Jeep and RTV road/trail for the last few miles from the west side of the pass. Also try the Clark/ Steamboat Lake/ Hahn's Peak areas in Northern Routt County. Another area not known as well is the Routt Divide Blow Down (County Road 64) near Clark. The area was hit by a freak micro-burst wind storm in 1997 and blew down about 20,000 acres of forest, an interesting place to visit. Fall Aspen colors, are easily found all along the forest areas.
9. Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area
"A great area for overnight camping; both campground or disperse.
Great fishing along the Elk River; requires patience.
Lots of hikes; Gold Creek, Zirkel Circle, Gilpen and Mica lakes. I wouldn't recommend any of the hikes for small children or out of shape adults. While the hikes are not easy ones, you will be rewarded with spectacular views. If you time it right the wild flowers can be pretty wonderful too; mid-July/August."
